James 4:13-15 – Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit” – yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.  What is your life?  For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.  Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

Luke 12:15-20 – And he said to them, “take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”  And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’  And he said, ‘I will do this:  I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’  But God said to him, ‘Fool!  This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?

We think we have years and years left to do the things we want to do, or the things that we need to do.   So we put off important matters for later, thinking that we will have plenty of time to take care of them.

However, the truth is each day is a gift, and we are never promised more than today.  More than that, today is the only day we ever have in which to work.  Yesterday cannot be changed, and tomorrow may never come.

Today, I simply want to remind you of two things that the Lord tells us to make sure we do today.  Two things that cannot be put off until tomorrow.

First, today is the only day you can be sure of for taking care of your eternal soul.

Luke 12:20 – The Lord said to the rich man, TODAY, your soul is required of you.  While he had been busy taking care of his physical needs, he ran out of time for taking care of spiritual things.

To all of us, in II Cor. 6:1-2, the apostle Paul says, today is the day of salvation.

Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried for our sins, and rose from the dead so that we    could be forgiven of our sins.  There is no reason for you to be unready on the day of judgment.  But you have to respond to the Lord’s invitation.

Jesus says, “come unto Me.”   Today is the only time you have to decide whether you believe in him and whether you will obey him in baptism.

Second, Today is the only day we have to take care of one another

Hebrews 3:13 – exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Galatians 6:1-2 – Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.  Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.  Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

As brothers and sister in Christ, we have a responsibility to look out for each other and to help one another to remain strong in the faith.   If you see a brother struggling, the time to help him is today, not tomorrow.

If someone needs encouragement, the time to help is today, not tomorrow.

Ephesians 5:15-16 – Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Brothers, do not let the blessings of God get away from you.  Don’t put off till tomorrow what you know you should do today.
